DO’S AND DON’TS OF SHELF STYLING

Shelf styling is a popular way of showcasing your personal style, creativity and attention to detail in your home decor. A well-styled shelf can bring life to a room and make it look put together, but it can be challenging to get it right. You don’t want your shelf being overcrowded making it look busy or untidy, nor do you want your shelf filled with miscoloured nicnac’s that don’t match the design or aesthetic of the rest of the room. The following tips will help you style the perfect shelf but remember it’s not permanent so you can change up any of the details as many times as you want helping to keep your house feeling fresh and keeping that interior designer voice at bay.

DO

  1. Start with a plan: Before you start styling your shelves have a plan in place. Determine what items you want to display and have them laid out around you so you can see what you’re working with.. This could be anything from books, to vases, to picture frames or even small objects.

  2. Group items in odd numbers: It’s been proven that objects grouped in odd numbers creates a more visually appealing and balanced look. For example, you could group three books together or five vases.

  3. Vary the height of your items: This will create interest and add dimension to your shelves. Place some tall, some short and some in between.

  4. Mix textures: Mixing textures is an effective way of adding depth to your shelf styling. For example, you could pair a smooth glass vase with a woven basket or a polished stone with a fluffy cushion.

  5. Use bookends: Bookends are not only functional but also serve as decorative pieces that can add a touch of style to your shelves. Choose bookends that complement your decor or use quirky bookends that are eye-catching and unique.

  6. Add plants: Plants are an excellent addition to any shelf, as they bring life and a touch of nature to your space. Choose small potted plants or succulents that complement your style and don't take up too much space on your shelves.

  7. Experiment with lighting: If your shelves are in a well-lit area, you can experiment with lighting to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Consider using fairy lights or a small lamp to highlight specific items on your shelves.

DON’T

  1. Overcrowd your shelves: When styling your shelves, it’s important to avoid overcrowding them. Too many items can make your shelves look cluttered and messy. Leave some space between items to allow your eye to rest and avoid visual clutter.

  2. Ignore the color scheme: A cohesive color scheme can make or break your shelf styling. Consider the colors of the items you’re displaying and choose a color scheme that complements them. You could go for a monochromatic look, a complementary color scheme, or even an accent color that ties everything together.

  3. Neglect symmetry: Symmetry is an essential aspect of shelf styling as it creates a balanced and visually appealing look. Try to arrange your items symmetrically on your shelves, especially if you’re displaying a collection of items or books.

  4. Ignore the background: The background of your shelves is just as important as the items you’re displaying. Make sure the background color complements your decor style and doesn't detract from the items you’re showcasing. Consider adding a wallpaper or paint the wall behind your shelves to add some interest.

  5. Use clutter as decor: Clutter is not a decor element, and it shouldn't be used as such. Avoid using items that are not functional or serve a purpose on your shelves. Stick to items that you love and have meaning to you.

In conclusion, shelf styling is a great way to showcase your personal style, it can be a really easy and inexpensive way to freshen up each room in your home, remember it’s not permanent so experiment until your heart desires.
